Basic Training in Biosafety in Research Laboratories

It is essential that all our research laboratory personnel are adequately trained. To facilitate this, EH&S has planned training sessions for Grafton based researchers. This training is open to anyone, however, anyone working at Biosafety Level 2, must attend this training now and renew the requirement every three years.

The Grafton Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) has endorsed these training sessions and is providing a grace period of six months to ensure that everyone listed on an active IBC registration has completed this training requirement.

The training is offered on the Grafton campus on the following dates. We encourage you to identify any of your staff that may need this training and ensure that they attend an upcoming session.

• Tuesday, October 6, 2009 from 10:00am to 12:00pm
  
• Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
• Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 10:00am to 12:00pm

This training will provide an overview of biosafety principles and practices. Topics include risk assessments, hazards of agents, exposure routes, personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, decontamination, spill response, exposure response, OSHA Blood borne Pathogen Standard, training requirements, and lab responsibilities. Regulatory requirements and institutional policies and procedures will also be discussed.
